Helix Sleep offers hybrid mattresses manufactured using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores fortified using polyfoam base layers. Helix Dual Mattress Review

Helix Sleep allows complete mattress customization. Customers are urged to fill out a survey that discusses their height, weight, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other elements. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following 6 mattress variants; each individual variant offers a unique combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep hybrids that have targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them optimal for side sleepers. While hybrids with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are ideal for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel most comfy on models with balanced support, while individuals who weigh 130 pounds or more often prefer the variants with additional support.

Helix Sleep also markets 2 models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both these variants have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, making them suitable for couples with different preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier individuals. This model has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection accommodates sleepers with a large assortment of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Dual Mattress Review

Construction Helix Dual Mattress Review

All 9 of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction should be fairly similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in density and firmness based on the foams utilized in order to achieve more/less firmness and more/less support. The 4 unique foams utilized within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the variants have all the foams – some just have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer nine distinct models (and hopefully have a model for everyone). Helix Dual Mattress Review

Underneath, I briefly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of your typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I thought it to be thin and stretchy, allowing for some great breathability. But, if you want something more lavish, you can choose to swap out the standard cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase change material for heat regulation.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you will find a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you are probably going to experience some great body shaping. While it might seem odd for a supposedly medium firmness bed to make use of a memory foam layer, it is important to remember that the existence of deep sinkage does not always translate to softness; in fact, oftentimes it generates quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After getting past the memory foam comfort layer, you will find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the memory foam and set a supportive, medium firm feel as you reach the pocketed coils below.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress consists of this segment of pocketed coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the structure, working to place the sleeper “on top” of the bed, as opposed to “in it”. Because the coils are wrapped individually, they’re also going to give extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Lastly, you’ll discover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This section doesn’t affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to provide the pocketed coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After taking a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us discuss their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix will vary widely depending on the model you pick out. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which will be very versatile and therefore very popular. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to oblige you with additional choices.

Lying down on the Helix Midnight, the uppermost foam comfort layer feels soft and produces some quality body contouring, while the other materials in the mattress work to counteract this and create an overall firmer composition. The firmer support foams and pocketed coils also help with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there is enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lower spine while supporting your back in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or people who want a firmer bed, there are two more options for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Many side sleepers will feel totally comfy on the Midnight, but, if you’re wanting less pressure while still going with a flexible medium firmness, you may decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and provides the surface a little bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically need to be more mindful of pressure because they sleep with most their weight on a tinier region. Those who are lighter than average or people in the market for lots of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel supported in the Midnight, especially if this is not their main position or they have a tendency to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses might be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so that they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their backbone.

Last, the manufacturer suggests Helix mattresses for sleepers up to 350 pounds or couples that weigh a maximum of 250 pounds each. If you or your spouse are substantially bigger than average, Helix has also created a bed called the Nightfall that’s created to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 lbs.

Partners with differing body types or preferences may also select a dual comfort option that pairs Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if neither of these models feel right, you could always check out the 4 other mattresses in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant in the collection).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s chat about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this will be significant for many buyers, those who doze with a spouse may find it particularly intriguing as it will show just how bothered you may be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Dual Mattress Review

According to my research, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space due to the quantity and quality of foam it contains, as well as the individually wrapped coils which help trap motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper afraid that motion from the other side of the mattress will bother you, you should not have much concern with this hybrid. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

While purchasing a brand-new mattress, the majority of people would like to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

While you may encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll reach the pocketed coils and find great support. This combination will interest a vast assortment of individuals, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

While I do feel the foam compress as I sit near the edge of the bed, the coils prevent the mattress from collapsing a lot . I feel very secure sitting on the mattress.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses perform above average when it comes to edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is due to their freshly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be a little compression in the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but laying on the side should feel comfy and secure. Couples who need more space to stretch out normally love stronger edges.

Lying down, I also feel like I could get close to the edge of the bed without feeling like I will roll off or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I believe the Helix has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of purchasing a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they usually include. Helix is no different. You customize the mattress that’s intended for you, place your order, and within a couple of weeks, it’s delivered to your home. From the moment you click to order the mattress, you have 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t ideal, you can return it for free of charge, and receive a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t restocked or resold. Actually, Helix Sleep locates a local place to donate it. When there’s no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Dual Mattress Review

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes an awesome 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it has a few limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the purchaser (like most warranties). Needless to say, you must be the original owner of the Helix to use the guarantee, and you will need to be sure that you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to have a proper foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4″ apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress starts to show an indentation of 1″ or longer, which is what usually happens when low-density foams break down, you could be eligible for a repair or replacement of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no turning, but it is suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to keep it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleaning, it is advised to use cool water along gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Make sure to wash using soft circular movements, rather than rubbing.
