Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses made using polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Hybrid Mattress

Helix Sleep offers complete mattress customization. Buyers are urged to fill out a questionnaire that discusses their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other options. Based on these results, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following 6 mattress options; each respective option gives a unique combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep hybrids with targeted cushioning conform closely, making them ideal for those who sleep on their side. While those that have moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are suitable for all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel more comfy on models with balanced support, while individuals that weigh 130 pounds or more tend to prefer the models with additional support.

Helix Sleep also offers two models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with extra support and moderate cushioning). Both these variants have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them great for couples with different tastes. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for larger, heavier people. This mattress has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect conforms to sleepers with a wide range of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate movement nicely, and create less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Hybrid Mattress

Construction Helix Hybrid Mattress

All 9 of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction should be quite similar. The six core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density based on the foams utilized in order to attain more/less firmness and more/less support. The four different foams used within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the models have all the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really won’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine different mattresses (and hopefully have a mattress for everyone). Helix Hybrid Mattress

Underneath, I quickly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses have the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some nice breathability. But, if you would like something more amped up, you can opt to swap out the standard cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change material to regulate heat.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll find a heavy layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow reaction to pressure, meaning you are probably going to experience some satisfying body contouring. Even though it may seem odd for a purportedly medium firm bed to feature a memory foam comfort layer, it’s crucial to remember that the existence of deep sinkage doesn’t necessarily translate to softness; in fact, most of the time it generates quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the memory foam comfort layer, you’ll discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and establish a supportive, medium firm feel as you reach the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – The bulk of the mattress consists of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system gives a supportive lift to the structure, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Because these coils are wrapped individually, they are also likely to encourage extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you’ll discover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This section does not affect the feel of the mattress too much, functioning mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After having a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us discuss their different firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix will vary widely depending on the version you choose. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which will be quite versatile and thus best-selling. If you have more specific requirements, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to oblige you with more options.

Lying down on the Midnight, the memory foam layer is soft and produces some quality body contouring, while the other materials in the Midnight work to control this and create an overall firmer structure. The firmer support foams and pocketed coils also assist with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there is just enough good comfort material here to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole upper spine in a neutral position. For larger buyers or people who prefer a firmer bed, there are two more models for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight models.

Majority of side sleepers will feel perfectly comfy on the Midnight, however, if you’re needing less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you might decide to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and provides the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be mindful of pressure because they sleep with most of their weight on a tinier area. People who are smaller than average or those in the market for a lot of pressure relief might want to stay with the plusher models.

Stomach sleepers should feel supported in the Midnight, particularly if this is not their primary position or they have a tendency to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices may be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so that they can make sure their hips do not dip and over-arch their backbone.

Finally, Helix Sleep suggests Helix mattresses for sleepers around 350 lbs or partners who weigh up to 250 lbs each. If you or your partner are substantially bigger than average, the company has also produced a mattress called the Nightfall that is made to accommodate a total weight of 1000 pounds.

Couples with different body types or tastes may also pick a dual comfort option that pairs Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if none of those models feel quite right, you could always have a look at the four other models in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, a little firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option in the line).

Motion Transfer

Now, let us chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that is detectable from 1 side of the bed to the other. While this will be important for all people, those who sleep with a spouse may find it particularly interesting as it will illuminate just how bothered you may be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Hybrid Mattress

Based on my observation, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, as well as the pocketed coils that help keep motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper afraid that motion from the opposite side of the mattress will wake you, then you should not have much concern with this mattress. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses are a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

When getting a new mattress, most individuals wish to know whether they will feel as though they are sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.

While you may encounter a little immediate sinkage from the uppermost foam layers, when you sink through these layers, you are going to reach the individually-wrapped coils and find fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a vast range of individuals, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the mattress, the coils stop the mattress from compressing too much beyond that. I feel quite secured sitting on the mattress.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is because of their freshly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but laying on the side will feel comfortable and secure. Partners who need more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Lying down, I also feel like I can get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll fall off or be pushed off the mattress. Overall, I believe that the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they usually come with. Helix Mattress is not any different. You customize the mattress that’s made for you, place your order, and within 2 weeks, it’s sent to your home. From the moment you click to purchase the mattress, you have 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it is not ideal, you can return it free of charge, and get a full refund.

If you do return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. In fact, Helix finds a local place to donate it. When there’s no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, they have it recycled instead. Helix Hybrid Mattress

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it has limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the customer (like most guarantees ). Of course, you should be the first owner of the Helix to make use of the guarantee, and you will need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty should be valid. That means you will need to have a suitable foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4″ apart) and you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress begins to show an indentation of 1 inch or longer, something that generally happens when low-density foams break down, you could be eligible for a repair or replacement of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no turning, but it is suggested that you rotate the mattress possibly once or twice a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For regular cleanup, it’s advised to use cold water along gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Make sure that you clean using soft circular movements, instead of rubbing.
