Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses manufactured using polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores fortified with polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Adjustable Base

Helix Sleep gives you complete mattress customization. Purchasers are asked to fill out a questionnaire that discusses their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other factors. Based on these answers, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following six mattress models; each respective option gives a one-of-a-kind combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep mattresses with targeted cushioning conform closely, making them perfect for those who sleep on their side. While hybrids that have moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are ideal for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel more comfy on variants with balanced support, while people who weigh 130 pounds or more tend to favor the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also offers two models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and extra support). Both these models have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them great for couples with different preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for larger, heavier individuals. This model has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect conforms to sleepers with a wide assortment of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also provide strong edge support, isolate movement nicely, and create less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Mattress Adjustable Base

Construction Helix Mattress Adjustable Base

All nine of the various iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction should be quite similar. The six core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density based on the foams used in order to achieve more/less firmness and more/less support. The 4 different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the beds have all of the foams – some only have three of the four – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the consumer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer nine distinct mattresses (and supposedly have a model for everybody). Helix Mattress Adjustable Base

Below, I quickly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of your average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses have exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be thin and pliable, allowing for some nice breathability. But, if you want something more amped up, you can opt to swap out the normal cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase-change material to regulate temperature.

Comfort Layer – On top, you will discover a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, meaning you’re probably going to experience some great body shaping. Even though it may seem odd for a supposedly medium firm mattress to incorporate a memory foam layer, it is important to remember that the presence of deep sinkage does not always translate to softness; in fact, most of the time it gives quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the memory foam comfort layer, you’ll find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and set a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress consists of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the construction, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Since the coils are wrapped individually, they’re also likely to allow extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Lastly, you will discover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This section does not really affect the feel of the mattress too much, functioning mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After taking a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s discuss their varying firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix is going to differ widely depending on the variant you select. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have moderate firmness levels, which is going to be quite versatile and therefore exceptionally popular. If you have more specific requirements, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to oblige you with additional choices.

Lying down on the Helix Midnight, the uppermost foam comfort layer is soft and produces some top quality body shaping, while the other materials within the mattress work to control this and create an overall firmer composition. The firmer support foams and individually-wrapped coils also help with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there is just enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lower spine while supporting your upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or people who want a firmer bed, there are two more options for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Most side sleepers should feel totally comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you are wanting a bit less pressure while still sticking with a versatile medium firmness, you may decide to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and gives the surface a small bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically need to be mindful of pressure because they sleep with most their weight on a smaller area. Those who are smaller than average or people looking for plenty of pressure relief may want to stay with the plusher variants.

Stomach sleepers will feel comfortable in the Midnight, particularly if this isn’t their main position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses might be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their back.

Lastly, Helix Sleep suggests Helix mattresses for sleepers around 350 lbs or couples who weigh up to 250 pounds each. If you or your partner are substantially larger than average, Helix has also created a mattress called the Nightfall that’s made to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 lbs.

Couples with different types of bodies or preferences can also pick a dual comfort option that pairs Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if neither of these models feel quite right, you can always have a look at the 4 other models in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest mattress in the line).

Motion Transfer

Now, let us talk about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be significant for all sleepers, those who doze with a partner may find it especially interesting as it will illuminate just how bothered you’ll be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Adjustable Base

Based on my observation, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the pocketed coils that help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper worried that movement from the other side of the mattress will wake you, then you should not have a lot of concern with this hybrid. I’d say that all of the Helix mattresses would be a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

While purchasing a brand-new mattress, most individuals wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

Even though you may experience some immediate sinkage in the uppermost foam layers, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the pocketed coils and find fantastic support. This combination will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the mattress, the coils stop the mattress from compressing a lot . I feel very secure sitting on the bed.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses perform above average for edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is because of their recently updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but lying on the side will feel comfy and secure. Partners who need more space to stretch out normally love stronger edges.

Lying down, I feel like I can get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I will fall over or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I think that the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of purchasing a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they usually include. Helix Sleep is not any different. You create the mattress that is meant for you, place your order, and within 2 weeks, it’s delivered to your home. From the minute you click to order the mattress, you have 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it is not what you wanted, you can return it for free of charge, and get a full refund.

If you do return the mattress, it isn’t restocked or resold. In fact, Helix locates a local place to donate it. When there’s no way the company can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it is recycled instead. Helix Mattress Adjustable Base

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes an amazing 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it has some limitations, exceptions, while the burden of proof is on the customer (like most guarantees ). Needless to say, you must be the original owner of the mattress to use the guarantee, and you need to be sure you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all of Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you need to use a suitable foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4 inches apart) and you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on it!

If your Helix begins to show an indentation of 1 inch or longer, which is what usually happens when low-density foams break down, then you could be eligible for a replacement or repair of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no turning, but it is suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleaning, it’s suggested to use cold water along gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Make sure to wash using soft circular motions, instead of rubbing.
