Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses made using polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced with polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Coils

Helix Sleep offers full mattress customization. Customers are urged to fill out a survey that asks for their weight, height, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other options. Based on these results, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following 6 mattress models; each respective model provides a one-of-a-kind combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep mattresses with targeted cushioning conform closely, making them optimal for side sleepers. While hybrids that have moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are great for all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel most comfy on variants with balanced support, while individuals who weigh 130 lbs or more tend to favor the variants with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets 2 mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with extra support and moderate cushioning). Both of these variants have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them great for couples with different preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for larger, heavier people. This variant has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect accommodates sleepers with a large assortment of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate movement well, and produce less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Mattress Coils

Construction Helix Mattress Coils

All 9 of the various iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction will be quite similar. The six core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density depending upon the foams used in order to get more/less support and more/less firmness. The four different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the mattresses have all the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer 9 distinct variants (and supposedly have a model for everybody). Helix Mattress Coils

Underneath, I briefly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses have exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I thought it to be thin and stretchy, allowing for some wonderful breathability. However, if you want something more amped up, you can opt to swap out the normal cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase-change fabric for heat regulation.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you will find a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you’re probably going to experience some great body shaping. While it might seem strange for a purportedly medium firmness bed to feature a memory foam layer, it is crucial to remember that the presence of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it gives quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you’ll uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and create a supportive, medium firm feel as you hit the pocketed coils below.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress is made up of this section of pocketed coils. This system brings a supportive lift into the construction, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the bed, as opposed to “in it”. Since the coils are wrapped individually, they’re also going to encourage additional breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you’ll uncover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This layer does not really affect the feel of the bed too much, functioning mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After taking a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s discuss their different firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix will differ widely depending on the model you choose. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have moderate firmness levels, which will be very versatile and thus best-selling. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to provide you with additional options.

Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam comfort layer is soft and produces some top quality body shaping, while the other materials in the mattress work to control this and create an overall firmer composition. The pocketed coils and the firmer support foams also help with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there is enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lumbar while supporting your upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or people who prefer a firmer bed, there are two more options for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn models.

Most side sleepers should feel totally comfy on the Midnight, however, if you’re needing a bit less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you might want to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with all of their weight on a smaller area. People who are smaller than average or people in the market for a lot of pressure relief may want to stick to the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this isn’t their main position or they have a tendency to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses may be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their back.

Lastly, Helix Sleep suggests Helix mattresses for sleepers up to 350 pounds or partners that weigh a maximum of 250 lbs each. If you or your partner are substantially bigger than average, the company has also produced a mattress called the Nightfall that is constructed to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Couples with differing types of bodies or tastes can also select a dual comfort model that combines Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if neither of those models feel quite right, you may always have a look at the 4 other beds in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let us talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that is detectable from one side of the bed to the other. While this will be significant for many sleepers, those who sleep with a spouse may find it especially intriguing as it’ll show just how bothered you may be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Coils

Based on my observation, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, as well as the individually wrapped coils that help keep motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper worried that movement from the other side of the bed will bother you, then you should not have much concern with this hybrid. I would say that all of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

When purchasing a brand-new mattress, the majority of people would like to know whether they will feel like they are sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it.

Even though you may encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you will find the pocketed coils and find great support. This combo will interest a vast range of individuals, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

While I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the Helix Midnight, the coils stop the mattress from collapsing a lot beyond that. I feel very secured seated on the bed.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their newly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There may be a little compression at the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but laying on the side should feel comfy and safe. Partners who want more space to stretch out normally love strong edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I can get near the edge of the bed without feeling like I will roll off or be ejected from the bed. Overall, I think the Helix mattress has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of purchasing a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they usually include. Helix Mattress is not any different. You create the mattress that is meant for you, place your order, and within two weeks, it is sent to your home. From the minute you click to buy the mattress, you have 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it isn’t what you wanted, you can return it free of charge, and receive a complete refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t restocked or resold. Actually, the company finds a local place to donate it. When there’s no way the company can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it is recycled instead. Helix Mattress Coils

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes an awesome 10-year warranty that covers flaws, but it comes with limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most guarantees ). Of course, you must be the original owner of the Helix to make use of the warranty, and you need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty should be valid. That means you need to use a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4″ apart) and you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your Helix begins to show an indentation of 1 inch or longer, something that typically happens when low-density foams break down, then you could be eligible for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no turning, but it is recommended that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to prevent it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleanup, it’s advised to use cold water along gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Make certain that you wash using gentle circular movements, instead of rubbing.
