Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses made using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced with polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Consumer Reports

Helix Sleep offers complete mattress customization. Buyers are asked to fill out a questionnaire that asks for their height, weight, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other factors. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress variants; each individual variant provides a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep hybrids that have targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them ideal for side sleepers. While hybrids that have moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are suitable for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel most comfortable on variants with balanced support, while those who weigh 130 pounds or more tend to prefer the variants with additional support.

Helix Sleep also offers 2 mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and extra support). Both these mattresses have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, which makes them ideal for couples with different preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier individuals. This mattress has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect conforms to sleepers with a large assortment of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and create less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Mattress Consumer Reports

Construction Helix Mattress Consumer Reports

All 9 of the different iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction will be rather similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in density and firmness based on the foams used in order to get more/less firmness and more/less support. The 4 unique foams used within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the models have all of the foams – some just have three of the four – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 different mattresses (and hopefully have a model for everyone). Helix Mattress Consumer Reports

Underneath, I quickly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of your average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses have the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I thought it to be thin and pliable, allowing for some nice breathability. But, if you would like something more amped up, you can opt to swap out the regular cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change material to regulate temperature.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you’ll encounter a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you’re likely to encounter some gratifying body shaping. Even though it may seem odd for a purportedly medium firm mattress to feature a memory foam comfort layer, it’s important to remember that the presence of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in fact, most of the time it gives quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the memory foam comfort layer, you’ll find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to curb the sinkage of the memory foam and establish a supportive, medium firm feeling as you hit the pocketed coils below.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress is made up of this segment of pocketed coils. This system gives a supportive lift into the structure, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, as opposed to “in it”. Because the coils are wrapped individually, they are also going to encourage extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you’ll find a thin section of high-density poly foam. This segment doesn’t affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to provide the pocketed coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After having a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s discuss their different firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix will differ widely depending on which model you pick out. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have medium firmness levels, which tends to be very versatile and thus best-selling. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to oblige you with more options.

Lying down on the Midnight, the uppermost foam layer feels soft and produces some high quality body contouring, while the rest of the materials within the Midnight work to control this and create an overall firmer composition. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there’s enough good comfort material here to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For larger sleepers or those who want a firmer mattress, there are two more options for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Most side sleepers will feel totally comfortable on the Midnight, but, if you are wanting a bit less pressure while still going with a versatile medium firmness, you may decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically need to be mindful of pressure since they sleep with all of their weight on a tinier area. People who are smaller than average or those in the market for a lot of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher variants.

Stomach sleepers should feel supported in the Midnight, especially if this isn’t their primary position or they tend to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their spine.

Lastly, Helix Sleep recommends Helix for sleepers around 350 pounds or partners that weigh up to 250 lbs each. If you or your spouse are significantly bigger than average, Helix has also produced a mattress called the Nightfall that’s constructed to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Couples with differing types of bodies or tastes can also select a dual comfort option that combines Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if neither of those options seem right, you can always have a look at the 4 other mattresses in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, a little firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option in the collection).

Motion Transfer

Now, let us chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that is noticeable from 1 side of the bed to the other. While this is going to be significant for many sleepers, those who sleep with a spouse may find it especially interesting as it’ll show just how bothered you may be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Consumer Reports

Based on my observation, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space because of the quantity and quality of foam it contains, as well as the individually wrapped coils which help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper worried that motion from the other side of the bed will wake you, you shouldn’t have much concern with this mattress. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses are a good option for couples.

Sinkage

When buying a new mattress, most individuals would like to know whether they will feel like they are sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.

While you may experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the pocketed coils and experience amazing support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of individuals, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the bed, the individually-wrapped coils stop the mattress from collapsing a lot . I feel quite secure sitting on the bed.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is due to their freshly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There may be some compression at the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but laying on the side should feel comfortable and safe. Couples who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate stronger edges.

Laying down, I feel like I can get near the edge of the bed without feeling like I will fall over or be pushed off the bed. Overall, I believe the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of purchasing a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they usually come with. Helix Sleep is not any different. You customize the mattress that is meant for you, place your order, and in two weeks, it’s delivered to your door. From the minute you click to purchase the mattress, you have 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t ideal, you can return it free of charge, and receive a complete refund.

If you do return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. In fact, the company finds a local place to donate it. When there is no way Helix can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it is recycled instead. Helix Mattress Consumer Reports

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year guarantee that covers flaws, but it has limitations, exceptions, while the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most warranties). Of course, you should be the first owner of the mattress to use the guarantee, and you need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all of Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to have a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4 inches apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress begins to have an indentation of 1 inch or longer, something that generally happens when low-density foams break down, you could be eligible for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no turning, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress possibly once or twice a year to prevent it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleaning, it’s suggested to use cool water with gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Make certain to clean using gentle circular movements, rather than rubbing.
