Helix Sleep offers hybrid mattresses manufactured with polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced with polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Layers

Helix Sleep offers full mattress customization. Buyers are asked to fill out a questionnaire that discusses their height, weight, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other options. Based on these answers, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following six mattress options; each respective model offers a one-of-a-kind combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep mattresses with targeted cushioning conform closely, making them perfect for those who sleep on their side. While those with moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are suitable for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel more comfy on variants with balanced support, while individuals who weigh 130 pounds or more often favor the variants with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets two mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with additional support and moderate cushioning). Both these mattresses have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, making them suitable for couples with different preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for larger, heavier individuals. This model has an extra layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a wide variety of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate movement well, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Mattress Layers

Construction Helix Mattress Layers

All 9 of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be quite similar. The six core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in firmness and density depending upon the foams utilized in order to achieve more/less firmness and more/less support. The 4 different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the beds have all the foams – some only have three of the four – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine distinct mattresses (and supposedly have a model for everybody). Helix Mattress Layers

Below, I concisely talk about the construction (materials and quality) of your typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I found it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some wonderful breathability. But, if you would like something more luxurious, you can elect to swap out the regular cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase-change material to regulate temperature.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you will find a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow response to pressure, meaning you’re probably going to experience some great body contouring. Even though it may seem odd for a supposedly medium firmness mattress to feature a memory foam layer, it’s crucial to remember that the presence of deep sinkage doesn’t necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it produces quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the memory foam comfort layer, you’ll uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the comfort layer and set a supportive, medium firm feel as you reach the pocketed coils underneath.

Support Layer – The bulk of the mattress consists of this segment of pocketed coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the construction, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, as opposed to “in it”. Because these coils are individually wrapped, they’re also going to give extra breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Lastly, you’ll find a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This segment does not really affect the feel of the bed too much, functioning mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After having a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us chat about their different firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on which model you choose. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have medium firmness levels, which is going to be very versatile and therefore very popular. If you have more specific requirements, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to oblige you with more options.

Lying down on the Midnight, the memory foam layer is soft and produces some quality body contouring, while the rest of the materials within the mattress work to counteract this and make an overall firmer structure. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there’s enough good comfort material here to conform to your lower spine while supporting your upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or those who prefer a firmer mattress, there are 2 more models for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight variants.

Many side sleepers should feel perfectly comfy on the Midnight, but, if you’re needing less pressure while still sticking with a versatile medium firmness, you might want to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and provides the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically need to be more mindful of pressure because they sleep with all of their weight on a tinier area. Those who are smaller than average or those in the market for plenty of pressure relief may want to stick to the plusher models.

Stomach sleepers will feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this is not their primary position or they have a tendency to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses might be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so that they can make sure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their spine.

Finally, the manufacturer recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers around 350 lbs or couples that weigh up to 250 lbs each. In the event you or your spouse are significantly bigger than average, Helix has also created a bed called the Nightfall that’s constructed to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with different body types or preferences can also pick a dual comfort model that combines Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if neither of those options feel right, you may always have a look at the 4 other variants in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option in the line).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s talk about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that’s noticeable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. While this will be important for many sleepers, those who sleep with a partner may find it especially interesting as it’ll show just how bothered you’ll be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Layers

Based on my observation, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space due to the quantity and quality of foam it contains, as well as the pocketed coils which help trap motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper afraid that movement from the opposite side of the mattress will wake you, then you shouldn’t have much concern with this mattress. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses are a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

When purchasing a new mattress, most men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they are sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it.

Even though you may encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, when you sink through these layers, you’ll find the individually-wrapped coils and find great support. This combo will interest a vast range of individuals, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the mattress, the individually-wrapped coils stop the mattress from collapsing too much . I feel quite secure sitting on the bed.

In my view, Helix mattresses perform above average when it comes to edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their recently updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil unit. There may be some compression at the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfy and secure. Partners who need more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I can get close to the edge of the bed without feeling like I will fall over or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I believe the Helix mattress has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically include. Helix is not any different. You customize the mattress that is intended for you, place your order, and in a couple of weeks, it is sent to your home. From the moment you click to purchase the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t ideal, you can return it free, and receive a complete refund.

Should you return the mattress, it is not resold or restocked. Actually, the company locates a local place to donate it. When there is no way the company can find a way to donate your returned mattress, they have it recycled instead. Helix Mattress Layers

Helix Warranty

Helix Sleep offers an awesome 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it has limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the customer (like most warranties). Needless to say, you must be the first owner of the Helix to use the warranty, and you need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty will be valid. That means you need to use a proper foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4″ apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on it!

If your Helix starts to have an indentation of 1 inch or more, something that generally happens when low-density foams break down, then you could be eligible for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no turning, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps once or twice a year to keep it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleanup, it’s suggested to use cold water along gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Make sure that you clean using gentle circular movements, rather than rubbing.
