Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses manufactured using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores fortified using polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Review 2019

Helix Sleep allows full mattress customization. Customers are urged to complete a questionnaire that asks for their height, weight, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other factors. Based on these answers, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following 6 mattress models; each individual model provides a unique combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep mattresses with targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them optimal for those who sleep on their side. While mattresses that have moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are great for all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel more comfy on models with balanced support, while individuals who weigh 130 pounds or more often prefer the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets two models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and extra support). Both these variants have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, which makes them great for couples with differing tastes. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier individuals. This variant has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect conforms to sleepers with a large variety of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate motion transfer well, and produce less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Mattress Review 2019

Construction Helix Mattress Review 2019

All nine of the different iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be quite similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in firmness and density depending on the foams used in order to attain more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the models have all of the foams – some only have 3 of the 4 – but it really won’t matter much for the consumer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine distinct variants (and hopefully have a model for everyone). Helix Mattress Review 2019

Underneath, I concisely discuss the construction (materials and quality) of the average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses have the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I thought it to be thin and stretchy, allowing for some nice breathability. However, if you want something more lavish, you can choose to swap out the normal cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change fabric for temperature regulation.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you’ll discover a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you’re likely to experience some gratifying body contouring. While it might seem strange for a supposedly medium firmness mattress to feature a memory foam comfort layer, it’s crucial to remember that the existence of deep sinkage doesn’t always translate to softness; in actuality, oftentimes it produces quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the memory foam comfort layer, you will uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and set a supportive, medium firm feel as you hit the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress consists of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the structure, working to place the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Because these coils are individually wrapped, they are also going to allow additional breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you’ll uncover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This layer does not really affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to provide the pocketed coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After taking a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s chat about their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on the model you pick out. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which tends to be quite versatile and therefore exceptionally popular. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to oblige you with more choices.

Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the uppermost foam layer feels soft and generates some quality body contouring, while the other materials within the Midnight work to control this and create an overall firmer structure. The firmer support foams and individually-wrapped coils also assist with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there’s just enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lower spine while supporting your back in a neutral position. For larger sleepers or people who prefer a firmer mattress, there are 2 more choices for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight variants.

Most side sleepers should feel perfectly comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you’re wanting less pressure while still going with a flexible medium firmness, you may decide to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically need to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with all of their weight on a smaller area. Those who are smaller than average or those looking for a lot of pressure relief may want to stick to the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel supported in the Midnight, especially if this is not their primary position or they have a tendency to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses may be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their spine.

Finally, Helix Sleep recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers up to 350 pounds or partners who weigh up to 250 lbs each. If you or your spouse are significantly bigger than average, Helix has also produced a mattress called the Nightfall that’s created to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 lbs.

Couples with different body types or tastes may also pick a dual comfort option that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if none of these options sound right, you may always have a look at the four other mattresses in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant in the collection).

Motion Transfer

Now, let us chat about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be crucial for many buyers, those who doze with a partner may find it especially intriguing as it’ll show just how bothered you’ll be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Review 2019

Based on my observation, Helix Sleep surpasses expectations for hybrids in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it contains, as well as the pocketed coils which help keep motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper concerned that motion from the other side of the bed will wake you, then you shouldn’t have a lot of concern with this mattress. I’d say that all of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

While getting a brand-new mattress, the majority of people wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they are sinking “into” the it or laying “on top” of it.

While you are likely to encounter a little immediate sinkage in the uppermost foam layers, when you sink through those layers, you’ll find the individually-wrapped coils and find fantastic support. This combination will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

While I do feel the foam compress as I sit close to the edge of the mattress, the individually-wrapped coils stop the mattress from collapsing too much . I feel quite secured sitting on the mattress.

In my view, Helix mattresses perform above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is because of their newly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be some compression at the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfy and safe. Partners who need more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Lying down, I also feel like I could get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I will roll over or be pushed off the bed. Overall, I believe the Helix mattress has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they usually include. Helix Mattress is not any different. You create the mattress that’s made for you, place your order, and in two weeks, it’s delivered to your door. From the minute you click to buy the mattress, you have 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it is not perfect, you can return it free of charge, and get a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. In fact, Helix Sleep finds a local place to donate it. When there is no way the company can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it is recycled instead. Helix Mattress Review 2019

Helix Warranty

Helix offers an awesome 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it has a few limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the customer (like most warranties). Of course, you should be the original owner of the mattress to make use of the guarantee, and you need to be sure that you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all of Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty should be valid. That means you need to have a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4 inches apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress begins to show an indentation of 1 inch or longer, which is what typically happens when low-density foams break down, then you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress possibly a couple of times a year to keep it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For regular cleaning, it’s suggested to use cold water with gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Make certain to clean using soft circular motions, instead of rubbing.
