Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses made with dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Review Consumer Reports

Helix Sleep offers full mattress customization. Purchasers are urged to fill out a questionnaire that asks for their weight, height, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other options. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress models; each respective option offers a unique combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep hybrids that have targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them ideal for those who sleep on their side. While those with moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are suitable for all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel most comfortable on models with balanced support, while people who weigh 130 pounds or more tend to favor the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets 2 mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both of these mattresses have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, which makes them ideal for couples with different preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier people. This variant has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a wide range of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and produce less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Mattress Review Consumer Reports

Construction Helix Mattress Review Consumer Reports

All nine of the various iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction will be quite similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in density and firmness based on the foams used in order to get more/less support and more/less firmness. The four different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the beds have all of the foams – some just have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 unique versions (and hopefully have a model for everyone). Helix Mattress Review Consumer Reports

Underneath, I quickly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of your typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be thin and stretchy, allowing for some nice breathability. However, if you want something more lavish, you can elect to swap out the normal cover for the UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change material for heat regulation.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you’ll discover a heavy layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow reaction to pressure, meaning you’re likely to encounter some great body shaping. While it might seem strange for a supposedly medium firm mattress to incorporate a memory foam comfort layer, it’s crucial to remember that the presence of deep sinkage doesn’t always translate to softness; in fact, most of the time it generates quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After getting past the comfort layer, you’ll uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to curb the sinkage of the comfort layer and set a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – The bulk of the mattress is made up of this section of pocketed coils. This system brings a supportive lift into the construction, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Because the coils are wrapped individually, they are also going to encourage extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Lastly, you will find a thin section of high-density poly foam. This section doesn’t really affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to provide the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After taking a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s talk about their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix is going to differ widely depending on the variant you select. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which tends to be quite versatile and thus best-selling. If you have more specific preferences, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to provide you with more options.

Laying down on the Midnight, the uppermost foam layer feels soft and produces some quality body contouring, while the rest of the materials in the mattress work to counteract this and make an overall firmer composition. The firmer support foams and individually-wrapped coils also assist with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there is just enough good comfort material here to conform to your lower spine while supporting your upper spine in a neutral position. For larger sleepers or people who want a firmer bed, there are two more choices for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight models.

Majority of side sleepers will feel totally comfy on the Midnight, however, if you are wanting less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you may want to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and provides the surface a little bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically need to be more mindful of pressure because they sleep with most their weight on a smaller region. Those who are smaller than average or people looking for lots of pressure relief may want to stay with the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach will feel comfortable in the Midnight, particularly if this isn’t their main position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so they can make sure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their backbone.

Last, Helix Sleep suggests Helix mattresses for sleepers up to 350 lbs or partners that weigh a maximum of 250 lbs each. If you or your partner are significantly bigger than average, the company has also created a bed called the Nightfall that is built to accommodate a total weight of 1000 lbs.

Couples with differing body types or tastes may also select a dual comfort option that combines Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if neither of these models seem right, you can always have a look at the four other beds in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s talk about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be significant for all sleepers, those who doze with a partner may find it particularly interesting as it will illuminate just how bothered you’ll be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Review Consumer Reports

Based on my observation, Helix Sleep surpasses expectations for hybrids in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, as well as the pocketed coils which help keep motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper afraid that motion from the other side of the mattress will bother you, then you shouldn’t have much concern with this mattress. I’d say that all of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

When getting a new mattress, the majority of individuals wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it.

Even though you’re going to experience a little immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to reach the individually-wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the mattress, the individually-wrapped coils prevent the mattress from compressing a lot . I feel quite secure seated on the bed.

In my view, Helix mattresses perform above average for edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their newly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be a little compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but lying on the side will feel comfortable and secure. Couples who need more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Lying down, I feel like I could get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll fall over or be pushed off the bed. Overall, I believe the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of purchasing a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they typically come with. Helix Sleep is no different. You create the mattress that’s intended for you, place your order, and in a couple of weeks, it is sent to your door. From the moment you click to order the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it isn’t what you wanted, you can return it free, and receive a complete refund.

If you do return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. Actually, Helix Sleep locates a local place to donate it. If there’s no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Mattress Review Consumer Reports

Helix Warranty

Helix offers an amazing 10-year warranty that covers flaws, but it has limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the customer (like most guarantees ). Of course, you must be the first owner of the mattress to make use of the guarantee, and you need to be sure you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to use a suitable base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4 inches apart) and that you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on it!

If your Helix starts to show an indentation of 1 inch or longer, which is what generally happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no flipping, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps once or twice a year to keep it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleanup, it is advised to use cold water with gentle dish soap to clean any dirt or stains. Be sure to clean using gentle circular motions, rather than rubbing.
