Helix Sleep offers hybrid mattresses made using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores fortified with polyfoam base layers. Helix Remove Old Mattress

Helix Sleep allows full mattress customization. Buyers are requested to fill out a survey that asks for their weight, height, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other elements. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following 6 mattress variants; each individual option gives a one-of-a-kind combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep mattresses with targeted cushioning conform closely, making them ideal for those who sleep on their side. While hybrids with moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are suitable for all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel most comfortable on models with balanced support, while individuals that weigh 130 pounds or more often prefer the models with additional support.

Helix Sleep also markets 2 variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both these mattresses have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them suitable for couples with differing preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for larger, heavier individuals. This mattress has an extra layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable selection accommodates sleepers with a large range of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and create less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Remove Old Mattress

Construction Helix Remove Old Mattress

All nine of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction will be fairly similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in firmness and density based on the foams used in order to attain more/less firmness and more/less support. The four different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the variants have all of the foams – some just have three of the four – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the consumer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer 9 distinct variants (and supposedly have a mattress for everyone). Helix Remove Old Mattress

Underneath, I quickly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of the average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses have the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I found it to be stretchy and thin, allowing for some great breathability. However, if you prefer something more amped up, you can elect to swap out the standard cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase change material to regulate heat.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you’ll find a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow reaction to pressure, meaning you are likely to encounter some gratifying body shaping. While it might seem strange for a purportedly medium firmness bed to make use of a memory foam layer, it’s important to remember that the presence of deep sinkage does not always translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it produces quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the memory foam comfort layer, you’ll find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and establish a supportive, medium firm feel as you hit the pocketed coils underneath.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress consists of this segment of individually wrapped coils. This system gives a supportive lift into the construction, working to place the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, instead of “in it”. Because the coils are individually wrapped, they’re also likely to allow extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you will uncover a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This section does not affect the feel of the bed too much, functioning mostly to provide the pocketed coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After having a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us discuss their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix will differ widely depending on the variant you pick out. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have medium firmness levels, which will be very versatile and therefore best-selling. If you have more specific requirements, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to oblige you with more options.

Lying down on the Helix Midnight, the uppermost foam comfort layer is soft and produces some quality body contouring, while the other materials in the mattress work to counteract this and make an overall firmer composition. The pocketed coils and the firmer support foams also help with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there’s enough good comfort material here to conform to your lower spine while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For larger sleepers or people who prefer a firmer mattress, there are 2 more models for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Many side sleepers will feel perfectly comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you are wanting a bit less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you might want to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and provides the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically need to be mindful of pressure since they sleep with most their weight on a tinier region. People who are smaller than average or those looking for a lot of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this is not their primary position or they have a tendency to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses might be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their backbone.

Finally, the manufacturer recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers up to 350 lbs or partners that weigh up to 250 pounds each. If you or your partner are substantially larger than average, the company has also produced a mattress called the Nightfall that is built to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with different body types or tastes can also pick a dual comfort variant that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if none of those models feel right, you may always check out the four other mattresses in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest mattress of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let us talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that is noticeable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be crucial for many sleepers, those who doze with a spouse may find it especially interesting as it’ll show just how bothered you may be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Remove Old Mattress

According to my research, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the individually wrapped coils that help keep motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper worried that motion from the other side of the bed will wake you, you should not have a lot of concern with this mattress. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

When getting a brand-new mattress, most people would like to know whether they’ll feel like they are sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.

Even though you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll reach the individually-wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

While I do feel the foam compress as I sit close to the edge of the bed, the coils stop the mattress from compressing a lot beyond that. I feel quite secured seated on the bed.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is due to their recently updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil system. There can be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but laying on the side will feel comfortable and safe. Partners who need more space to stretch out normally love strong edges.

Laying down, I feel like I could get near the edge of the bed without feeling like I’ll fall off or be pushed off the bed. Overall, I think that the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of purchasing a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically come with. Helix Sleep is not any different. You customize the mattress that’s made for you, place your order, and within a couple of weeks, it is sent to your home. From the moment you click to purchase the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it is not what you wanted, you can return it free, and receive a complete refund.

If you do return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. In fact, Helix locates a local place to donate it. If there’s no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Remove Old Mattress

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes an amazing 10-year warranty that covers flaws, but it comes with limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most warranties). Of course, you must be the original owner of the Helix to make use of the warranty, and you need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you need to have a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4 inches apart) and you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress begins to have an indentation of 1 inch or longer, which is what generally happens when low-density foams break down, then you could qualify for a repair or replacement of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no flipping, but it’s recommended that you rotate the mattress perhaps once or twice a year to prevent it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For routine cleaning, it’s suggested to use cool water with gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Be certain to wash using soft circular motions, rather than rubbing.
