Helix Sleep offers hybrid mattresses manufactured with polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores fortified with polyfoam base layers. Helix Sleep.Com/Benguest

Helix Sleep allows full mattress customization. Customers are asked to fill out a questionnaire that discusses their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other elements. Based on these results, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following 6 mattress variants; each respective model gives a one-of-a-kind combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep mattresses that have targeted cushioning conform closely, making them ideal for side sleepers. While hybrids with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are great for all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel more comfy on models with balanced support, while people that weigh 130 pounds or more tend to favor the variants with additional support.

Helix Sleep also offers two models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both of these models have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them ideal for couples with differing preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for bigger, heavier individuals. This variant has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable aspect conforms to sleepers with a large range of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate movement nicely, and create less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Sleep.Com/Benguest

Construction Helix Sleep.Com/Benguest

All nine of the various iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction should be rather similar. The six core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density based on the foams utilized in order to get more/less firmness and more/less support. The 4 different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the models have all of the foams – some only have three of the four – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 unique versions (and hopefully have a model for everyone). Helix Sleep.Com/Benguest

Underneath, I briefly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of your average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I thought it to be thin and stretchy, allowing for some wonderful breathability. But, if you prefer something more amped up, you can elect to swap out the regular cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase change fabric to regulate heat.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you will discover a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, meaning you’re probably going to experience some gratifying body shaping. While it might seem odd for a supposedly medium firmness bed to incorporate a memory foam layer, it is important to remember that the existence of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, oftentimes it generates quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the comfort layer, you’ll uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and create a supportive, medium firm feel as you hit the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress consists of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system gives a supportive lift into the construction, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Because the coils are individually wrapped, they’re also going to give extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you’ll uncover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This layer does not really affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After having a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s discuss their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on which version you choose. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which tends to be quite versatile and thus exceptionally popular. If you have more specific preferences, however, Helix Sleep is happy to oblige you with additional choices.

Lying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam layer is soft and produces some quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials within the mattress work to counteract this and make an overall firmer structure. The firmer support foams and individually-wrapped coils also assist with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there is enough good comfort material here to conform to your lumbar while supporting your upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or people who want a firmer bed, there are two more choices for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Majority of side sleepers should feel totally comfortable on the Midnight, but, if you are needing less pressure while still going with a versatile medium firmness, you may decide to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be mindful of pressure since they sleep with all of their weight on a smaller area. People who are smaller than average or those in the market for plenty of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach will feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this is not their primary position or they have a tendency to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses may be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their back.

Lastly, Helix Sleep recommends Helix for sleepers up to 350 lbs or couples who weigh a maximum of 250 lbs each. If you or your partner are significantly larger than average, the company has also created a bed called the Nightfall that’s built to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with different body types or tastes can also select a dual comfort model that combines Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if neither of these options feel quite right, you could always check out the 4 other variants in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, a little firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Now, let us talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s noticeable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be significant for all buyers, those who sleep with a spouse may find it especially interesting as it’ll illuminate just how bothered you’ll be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Sleep.Com/Benguest

Based on my observation, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it contains, as well as the individually wrapped coils which help keep motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper worried that movement from the other side of the bed will wake you, you should not have much concern with this hybrid. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

While buying a brand-new mattress, the majority of people want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

Even though you may experience a little immediate sinkage in the uppermost foam layers, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the individually-wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the Helix Midnight, the pocketed coils stop the mattress from collapsing too much . I feel quite secured seated on the mattress.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their recently updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There can be a little compression in the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but laying on the side should feel comfy and safe. Couples who need more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Lying down, I feel like I can get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I will fall off or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I think the Helix has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically come with. Helix Sleep is no different. You create the mattress that is intended for you, place your order, and within two weeks, it’s delivered to your door. From the moment you click to order the mattress, you have 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it is not perfect, you can return it free, and receive a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it is not resold or restocked. Actually, Helix Sleep does its best to find a local place to donate it. If there is no way Helix can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it is recycled instead. Helix Sleep.Com/Benguest

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes an amazing 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it has limitations, exceptions, while the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most warranties). Of course, you must be the first owner of the mattress to make use of the guarantee, and you will need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to use a proper foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4 inches apart) and that you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your Helix begins to have an indentation of 1 inch or longer, which is what usually happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a repair or replacement of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no flipping, but it’s recommended that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to keep it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For regular cleaning, it is advised to use cool water along gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Be sure to clean using gentle circular motions, rather than rubbing.
