Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses manufactured with dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced with polyfoam base layers. Helix Sleep Consumer Reports

Helix Sleep offers complete mattress customization. Customers are urged to fill out a questionnaire that discusses their height, weight, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other factors. Based on these results, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following 6 mattress variants; each individual model provides a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep hybrids with targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them ideal for side sleepers. While mattresses with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are ideal for all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel more comfy on variants with balanced support, while those that weigh 130 pounds or more tend to prefer the models with additional support.

Helix Sleep also markets 2 models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and extra support). Both of these models have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them great for couples with different preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier people. This model has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect conforms to sleepers with a wide assortment of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also provide strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Sleep Consumer Reports

Construction Helix Sleep Consumer Reports

All nine of the different iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction will be quite similar. The six core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density based on the foams utilized in order to get more/less firmness and more/less support. The four different foams used within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the models have all of the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine different variants (and supposedly have a model for everyone). Helix Sleep Consumer Reports

Underneath, I concisely talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I thought it to be thin and pliable, allowing for some nice breathability. But, if you want something more luxurious, you can choose to swap out the normal cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase-change fabric to regulate temperature.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you’ll discover a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, which means you’re probably going to experience some gratifying body contouring. Even though it may seem odd for a supposedly medium firmness bed to incorporate a memory foam comfort layer, it is crucial to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it generates quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you will find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to suppress the sinkage of the memory foam and set a supportive, medium firm feeling as you hit the pocketed coils below.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress consists of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift into the construction, working to place the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Because the coils are wrapped individually, they’re also likely to allow extra breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you’ll find a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This layer doesn’t really affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to provide the individually wrapped coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After taking a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s talk about their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on which version you pick out. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have moderate firmness levels, which will be very versatile and thus exceptionally popular. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to oblige you with additional choices.

Lying down on the Midnight, the uppermost foam layer is soft and produces some high quality body contouring, while the rest of the materials within the Midnight work to control this and create an overall firmer structure. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there is enough good comfort material here to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole upper spine in a neutral position. For larger sleepers or people who want a firmer bed, there are two more choices for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight variants.

Most side sleepers should feel perfectly comfortable on the Midnight, but, if you’re needing a bit less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you may decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with all their weight on a smaller region. Those who are lighter than average or people in the market for lots of pressure relief may want to stick to the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this isn’t their primary position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses may be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so that they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their backbone.

Lastly, Helix Sleep suggests Helix for sleepers around 350 lbs or couples that weigh up to 250 pounds each. In the event you or your spouse are substantially bigger than average, Helix has also created a bed called the Nightfall that is constructed to accommodate a total weight of 1000 pounds.

Couples with differing body types or tastes may also select a dual comfort option that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if none of these options seem quite right, you could always check out the 4 other mattresses in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, a little firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Now, let’s chat about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s noticeable from one side of the bed to the other. While this is going to be important for many people, those who sleep with a spouse may find it particularly intriguing as it will show just how bothered you’ll be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Sleep Consumer Reports

According to my research, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space due to the quantity and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the individually wrapped coils which help keep motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper worried that motion from the other side of the mattress will wake you, you should not have much concern with this mattress. I’d say that all of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

While purchasing a brand-new mattress, the majority of men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

Even though you are going to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, when you sink through those layers, you are going to reach the pocketed coils and find fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a wide range of individuals, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the bed, the coils prevent the mattress from compressing a lot beyond that. I feel very secure sitting on the bed.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their newly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There can be a little compression at the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but laying on the side will feel comfortable and secure. Couples who need more space to stretch out normally love stronger edges.

Lying down, I also feel like I can get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll roll over or be ejected from the bed. Overall, I believe that the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of purchasing a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically come with. Helix is not any different. You create the mattress that is meant for you, place your order, and within 2 weeks, it’s delivered to your door. From the minute you click to purchase the mattress, you have 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t ideal, you can return it for free of charge, and receive a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it is not restocked or resold. Actually, Helix Sleep does its best to find a local place to donate it. If there’s no way the company can find a way to donate your returned mattress, they have it recycled instead. Helix Sleep Consumer Reports

Helix Warranty

Helix Sleep offers a generous 10-year warranty that covers flaws, but it comes with limitations, exceptions, while the burden of proof is on the customer (like most warranties). Needless to say, you should be the first owner of the Helix to use the guarantee, and you will need to be sure you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all of Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to have a proper foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4 inches apart) and that you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress begins to have an indentation of 1″ or more, something that typically happens when low-density foams break down, then you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no turning, but it is recommended that you rotate the mattress possibly once or twice a year to prevent it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleaning, it’s suggested to use cool water with gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Make sure that you clean using soft circular movements, rather than rubbing.
