Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses manufactured with polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced with polyfoam base layers. Helix Sleep Foundation

Helix Sleep allows full mattress customization. Buyers are asked to fill out a questionnaire that discusses their height, weight, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other elements. Based on these results, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following 6 mattress models; each individual option gives a one-of-a-kind combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep hybrids that have targeted cushioning conform closely, making them optimal for those who sleep on their side. While those with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are suitable for all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel more comfy on variants with balanced support, while individuals who weigh 130 pounds or more tend to prefer the variants with extra support.

Helix Sleep also offers two models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with additional support and moderate cushioning). Both these models have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, which makes them suitable for couples with differing preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier individuals. This variant has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect conforms to sleepers with a large assortment of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate motion transfer well, and produce less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Sleep Foundation

Construction Helix Sleep Foundation

All nine of the different iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be fairly similar. The 6 core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density depending upon the foams used in order to get more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the mattresses have all of the foams – some only have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer 9 unique versions (and supposedly have a model for everyone). Helix Sleep Foundation

Below, I quickly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses have exactly the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I thought it to be thin and pliable, allowing for some nice breathability. But, if you prefer something more luxurious, you can opt to swap out the normal cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change material to regulate heat.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll find a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you’re probably going to experience some gratifying body shaping. While it might seem strange for a supposedly medium firmness bed to feature a memory foam comfort layer, it is important to remember that the existence of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, oftentimes it gives quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the memory foam comfort layer, you will discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and set a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress consists of this section of pocketed coils. This system gives a supportive lift to the construction, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the bed, as opposed to “in it”. Since these coils are wrapped individually, they’re also likely to allow additional breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you will uncover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This section does not really affect the feel of the mattress too much, functioning mostly to provide the pocketed coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After having a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s chat about their different firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on the version you select. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which tends to be very versatile and therefore best-selling. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to oblige you with additional choices.

Lying down on the Helix Midnight, the uppermost foam comfort layer is soft and generates some quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials within the mattress work to control this and make an overall firmer structure. The pocketed coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there is just enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole upper spine in a neutral position. For larger buyers or people who prefer a firmer bed, there are 2 more options for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn models.

Many side sleepers should feel perfectly comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you are needing less pressure while still sticking with a versatile medium firmness, you may want to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically have to be mindful of pressure because they sleep with most of their weight on a tinier area. Those who are lighter than average or those looking for plenty of pressure relief might want to stay with the plusher models.

Stomach sleepers will feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this is not their primary position or they have a tendency to switch things up a lot. Firmer mattresses might be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so they can make sure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their spine.

Last, the manufacturer suggests Helix for sleepers around 350 lbs or partners that weigh a maximum of 250 pounds each. In the event you or your partner are significantly larger than average, the company has also produced a bed called the Nightfall that’s created to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 lbs.

Couples with different body types or tastes can also pick a dual comfort model that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if none of those models seem right, you may always have a look at the four other mattresses in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant in the line).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that is noticeable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. While this will be important for many buyers, those who sleep with a partner may find it particularly intriguing as it will illuminate just how bothered you may be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Sleep Foundation

Based on my observation, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space because of the quantity and quality of foam it contains, as well as the individually wrapped coils that help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper worried that movement from the other side of the mattress will wake you, you shouldn’t have a lot of concern with this hybrid. I would say that all of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

When purchasing a new mattress, most men and women wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it.

Even though you’re going to experience a little immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the individually-wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

While I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the bed, the coils prevent the mattress from collapsing too much beyond that. I feel quite secured seated on the mattress.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is due to their newly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There may be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfortable and safe. Couples who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate stronger edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I can get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll roll over or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I believe that the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of purchasing a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically include. Helix Sleep is not any different. You create the mattress that is made for you, place your order, and in a couple of weeks, it’s sent to your door. From the moment you click to order the mattress, you have 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it is not ideal, you can return it free, and get a full refund.

If you do return the mattress, it is not resold or restocked. Actually, the company finds a local place to donate it. When there is no way the company can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it is recycled instead. Helix Sleep Foundation

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes an awesome 10-year guarantee that covers flaws, but it has a few limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the customer (like most warranties). Of course, you should be the first owner of the mattress to use the guarantee, and you need to be sure that you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty will be valid. That means you will need to use a suitable foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4″ apart) and that you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress begins to have an indentation of 1″ or longer, something that typically happens when low-density foams break down, then you could be eligible for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no turning, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps once or twice a year to keep it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For regular cleanup, it’s suggested to use cool water along gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Make certain that you clean using gentle circular motions, instead of rubbing.
