Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses manufactured using polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores fortified with polyfoam base layers. Helix Sleep Manta

Helix Sleep allows complete mattress customization. Purchasers are requested to fill out a survey that discusses their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other factors. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following 6 mattress variants; each respective option offers a one-of-a-kind combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep mattresses that have targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them ideal for side sleepers. While those with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are ideal for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel most comfy on models with balanced support, while those that weigh 130 lbs or more often favor the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets 2 variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and extra support). Both these mattresses have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them suitable for couples with differing preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for bigger, heavier individuals. This model has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a large range of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate motion transfer well, and produce less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Sleep Manta

Construction Helix Sleep Manta

All 9 of the different iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be fairly similar. The six core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in firmness and density based upon the foams used in order to get more/less support and more/less firmness. The four unique foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the variants have all the foams – some only have 3 of the 4 – but it really won’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine distinct versions (and hopefully have a mattress for everyone). Helix Sleep Manta

Underneath, I concisely talk about the construction (materials and quality) of your typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I thought it to be stretchy and thin, allowing for some nice breathability. However, if you want something more amped up, you can opt to swap out the standard cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase change fabric to regulate temperature.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you’ll find a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, which means you’re likely to encounter some great body contouring. While it might seem odd for a supposedly medium firmness mattress to make use of a memory foam comfort layer, it is important to remember that the presence of deep sinkage does not always translate to softness; in fact, oftentimes it generates quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the memory foam comfort layer, you will uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to curb the sinkage of the memory foam and establish a supportive, medium firm feel as you reach the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress is made up of this segment of pocketed coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the structure, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, as opposed to “in it”. Because the coils are wrapped individually, they’re also going to encourage extra breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you’ll find a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This layer doesn’t affect the feel of the bed too much, functioning mostly to provide the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After having a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us talk about their different firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix is going to differ widely depending on the model you pick out. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which is going to be quite versatile and thus best-selling. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to provide you with more choices.

Lying down on the Helix Midnight, the uppermost foam layer feels soft and produces some quality body contouring, while the rest of the materials in the mattress work to control this and create an overall firmer structure. The firmer support foams and individually-wrapped coils also assist with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there is enough good comfort material in the Midnight to conform to your lumbar while supporting your back in a neutral position. For larger buyers or those who want a firmer bed, there are two more models for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight models.

Many side sleepers will feel totally comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you’re wanting less pressure while still going with a flexible medium firmness, you might want to check out the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and provides the surface a little bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically need to be mindful of pressure since they sleep with all their weight on a smaller region. Those who are smaller than average or those in the market for a lot of pressure relief may want to stay with the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach will feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this is not their primary position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so they can make sure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their back.

Lastly, the manufacturer suggests Helix mattresses for sleepers around 350 pounds or partners who weigh up to 250 lbs each. In the event you or your partner are significantly larger than average, the company has also created a mattress called the Nightfall that is constructed to accommodate a total weight of 1000 lbs.

Couples with differing body types or preferences can also pick a dual comfort variant that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if none of these options seem right, you could always check out the 4 other mattresses in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option in the line).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that’s detectable from 1 side of the bed to the other. While this is going to be crucial for many people, those who doze with a partner may find it especially intriguing as it will illuminate just how bothered you’ll be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Sleep Manta

According to my research, Helix Sleep surpasses expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it contains, in addition to the pocketed coils which help keep motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper worried that movement from the other side of the mattress will bother you, then you shouldn’t have a lot of concern with this hybrid. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

While buying a brand-new mattress, most people want to know whether they will feel like they are sinking “into” the it or laying “on top” of it.

While you are likely to experience some immediate sinkage in the uppermost foam layers, by the time you sink through those layers, you will hit the pocketed coils and find fantastic support. This combination will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the bed, the coils stop the mattress from collapsing a lot beyond that. I feel quite secure sitting on the mattress.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses perform above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is because of their newly updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil system. There may be some compression at the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but laying on the side should feel comfortable and safe. Couples who need more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I could get close to the edge of the bed without feeling like I will fall over or be ejected from the bed. Overall, I think the Helix has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of buying a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they usually include. Helix Mattress is not any different. You create the mattress that’s meant for you, place your order, and within a couple of weeks, it’s delivered to your home. From the minute you click to purchase the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it isn’t what you wanted, you can return it free, and get a complete refund.

Should you return the mattress, it is not resold or restocked. In fact, Helix Sleep finds a local place to donate it. When there is no way the company can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Sleep Manta

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it has a few limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most warranties). Needless to say, you should be the first owner of the mattress to make use of the guarantee, and you need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to use a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4″ apart) and you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress starts to show an indentation of 1″ or more, which is what typically happens when low-density foams break down, you could be eligible for a replacement or repair of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For regular cleaning, it is suggested to use cold water along gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Be sure to clean using soft circular motions, instead of rubbing.
