Helix Sleep offers hybrid mattresses made with dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Vs Sleep Number

Helix Sleep offers complete mattress customization. Purchasers are urged to fill out a survey that discusses their weight, height, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other elements. Based on these answers, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following six mattress options; each individual model gives a unique combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep mattresses that have targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them optimal for side sleepers. While hybrids with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are suitable for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel most comfortable on variants with balanced support, while people that weigh 130 pounds or more tend to favor the models with additional support.

Helix Sleep also offers two models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and extra support). Both these models have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, which makes them great for couples with differing preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for larger, heavier people. This mattress has an extra layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection accommodates sleepers with a wide variety of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate movement nicely, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Vs Sleep Number

Construction Helix Vs Sleep Number

All 9 of the different iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction should be rather similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in density and firmness depending upon the foams used in order to get more/less firmness and more/less support. The 4 unique foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the mattresses have all of the foams – some only have 3 of the 4 – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 unique variants (and hopefully have a mattress for everyone). Helix Vs Sleep Number

Underneath, I quickly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of the average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I thought it to be thin and pliable, allowing for some nice breathability. However, if you would like something more luxurious, you can elect to swap out the normal cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase change fabric to regulate heat.

Comfort Layer – On top, you will find a thick layer of memory foam. This material has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you are likely to experience some satisfying body shaping. While it might seem strange for a supposedly medium firmness bed to make use of a memory foam comfort layer, it is important to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage doesn’t always translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it gives quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the comfort layer, you will find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and create a supportive, medium firm feeling as you hit the pocketed coils underneath.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress is made up of this section of pocketed coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the construction, working to place the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Because these coils are individually wrapped, they are also likely to allow additional breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you will find a thin section of high-density poly foam. This section doesn’t really affect the feel of the mattress too much, functioning mostly to provide the pocketed coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After taking a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s discuss their varying firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on which model you choose. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have moderate firmness levels, which is going to be quite versatile and thus best-selling. If you have more specific requirements, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to provide you with additional choices.

Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the uppermost foam layer feels soft and produces some top quality body contouring, while the rest of the materials within the mattress work to counteract this and create an overall firmer structure. The firmer support foams and pocketed coils also assist with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there is just enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lower spine while supporting your whole upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or those who want a firmer mattress, there are 2 more choices for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight variants.

Many side sleepers will feel totally comfy on the Midnight, but, if you are wanting less pressure while still going with a flexible medium firmness, you might want to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and provides the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically need to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with most of their weight on a smaller area. Those who are lighter than average or people in the market for lots of pressure relief might want to stay with the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach will feel supported in the Midnight, especially if this isn’t their main position or they have a tendency to switch things up a lot. Firmer mattresses may be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so they can make sure their hips do not dip and over-arch their back.

Finally, Helix Sleep recommends Helix for sleepers around 350 pounds or partners that weigh a maximum of 250 lbs each. In the event you or your partner are substantially bigger than average, the company has also produced a bed called the Nightfall that’s constructed to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Couples with different body types or preferences can also select a dual comfort variant that combines Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if none of these options seem quite right, you can always have a look at the 4 other variants in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option in the line).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s chat about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this will be crucial for many sleepers, those who doze with a partner may find it especially intriguing as it’ll show just how bothered you’ll be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Vs Sleep Number

Based on my observation, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space due to the quantity and quality of foam it incorporates, as well as the individually wrapped coils which help trap motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper worried that movement from the opposite side of the mattress will bother you, you shouldn’t have a lot of concern with this mattress. I would say that all of the Helix mattresses are a good option for couples.

Sinkage

When purchasing a new mattress, the majority of people wish to know whether they will feel like they are sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

While you’re likely to encounter a little immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the pocketed coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a wide assortment of individuals, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

While I do feel the foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the Helix Midnight, the pocketed coils stop the mattress from collapsing too much . I feel quite secured seated on the bed.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses perform above average when it comes to edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is due to their recently updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There may be a little compression at the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but laying on the side will feel comfy and safe. Couples who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate stronger edges.

Lying down, I feel like I can get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I will roll over or be pushed off the mattress. Overall, I think the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of purchasing a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically include. Helix is no different. You customize the mattress that’s intended for you, place your order, and within two weeks, it is sent to your home. From the minute you click to order the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it isn’t perfect, you can return it for free, and get a complete refund.

If you do return the mattress, it is not restocked or resold. In fact, Helix locates a local place to donate it. If there is no way Helix can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it is recycled instead. Helix Vs Sleep Number

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes an awesome 10-year warranty that covers flaws, but it comes with some limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most warranties). Needless to say, you must be the original owner of the mattress to make use of the warranty, and you will need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you need to use a suitable base (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4″ apart) and you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress starts to have an indentation of 1 inch or more, something that generally happens when low-density foams break down, then you could be eligible for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no flipping, but it is recommended that you rotate the mattress possibly once or twice a year to keep it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleaning, it’s suggested to use cool water with gentle dish soap to clean any dirt or stains. Be sure that you clean using gentle circular movements, rather than rubbing.
