Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses made using polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores fortified with polyfoam base layers. How Thick Is Helix Mattress

Helix Sleep offers complete mattress customization. Purchasers are requested to fill out a questionnaire that asks for their height, weight, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other elements. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following 6 mattress options; each respective option offers a unique combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep hybrids that have targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them ideal for side sleepers. While hybrids with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are ideal for all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel more comfortable on models with balanced support, while individuals who weigh 130 pounds or more often prefer the variants with additional support.

Helix Sleep also markets two mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with extra support and moderate cushioning). Both these mattresses have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them ideal for couples with differing tastes. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for larger, heavier individuals. This model has an extra layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable aspect conforms to sleepers with a large range of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate movement nicely, and create less noise than the average hybrid. How Thick Is Helix Mattress

Construction How Thick Is Helix Mattress

All 9 of the different iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction will be rather similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in density and firmness based on the foams utilized in order to achieve more/less firmness and more/less support. The four unique foams used within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the models have all of the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the consumer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine different mattresses (and hopefully have a model for everybody). How Thick Is Helix Mattress

Underneath, I concisely talk about the construction (materials and quality) of your typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses have the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I thought it to be stretchy and thin, allowing for some nice breathability. But, if you prefer something more luxurious, you can choose to swap out the standard cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change material for temperature regulation.

Comfort Layer – On top, you will find a heavy layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow response to pressure, meaning you are likely to experience some satisfying body contouring. Even though it may seem strange for a purportedly medium firmness bed to incorporate a memory foam comfort layer, it’s crucial to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage doesn’t necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, oftentimes it generates quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you’ll discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the comfort layer and set a supportive, medium firm feeling as you hit the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress is made up of this segment of pocketed coils. This system gives a supportive lift to the structure, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the bed, as opposed to “in it”. Because the coils are wrapped individually, they are also going to encourage extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you will uncover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This layer does not affect the feel of the bed too much, working mostly to provide the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After taking a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us chat about their varying feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix will vary widely depending on the model you pick out. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which tends to be quite versatile and thus best-selling. If you have more specific requirements, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to provide you with additional choices.

Lying down on the Midnight, the uppermost foam comfort layer feels soft and produces some high quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials within the mattress work to counteract this and create an overall firmer composition. The pocketed coils and the firmer support foams also help with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there is just enough good comfort material here to conform to your lower spine while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For larger sleepers or people who prefer a firmer bed, there are 2 more models for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight variants.

Most side sleepers will feel totally comfy on the Midnight, however, if you’re wanting less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you may decide to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and provides the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically need to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with most their weight on a smaller area. People who are smaller than average or those looking for a lot of pressure relief may want to stay with the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel supported in the Midnight, particularly if this is not their primary position or they have a tendency to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses might be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their back.

Finally, Helix Sleep suggests Helix mattresses for sleepers around 350 lbs or couples that weigh a maximum of 250 pounds each. If you or your partner are significantly bigger than average, the company has also created a bed called the Nightfall that’s constructed to accommodate a total weight of 1000 lbs.

Partners with different body types or tastes may also select a dual comfort variant that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if neither of these models feel right, you could always have a look at the 4 other variants in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option in the collection).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that is detectable from one side of the bed to the other. While this will be important for all people, those who doze with a partner may find it especially interesting as it will illuminate just how bothered you’ll be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. How Thick Is Helix Mattress

Based on my observation, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the individually wrapped coils which help keep motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper afraid that movement from the other side of the bed will wake you, then you shouldn’t have much concern with this mattress. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses are a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

While buying a brand-new mattress, the majority of people wish to know whether they will feel as though they are sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

While you are going to experience some immediate sinkage in the uppermost foam layers, when you sink through those layers, you are going to reach the pocketed coils and experience amazing support. This combo will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

While I do feel the memory foam compress as I sit close to the edge of the mattress, the coils prevent the mattress from compressing too much beyond that. I feel quite secure sitting on the bed.

In my view, Helix mattresses perform above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their recently updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil system. There can be some compression at the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfortable and safe. Partners who need more space to stretch out typically appreciate stronger edges.

Laying down, I feel like I can get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I will roll off or be pushed off the bed. Overall, I believe that the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of purchasing a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they usually include. Helix Mattress is no different. You create the mattress that is made for you, place your order, and within a couple of weeks, it’s sent to your home. From the minute you click to buy the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it isn’t perfect, you can return it for free, and receive a full refund.

If you do return the mattress, it is not resold or restocked. Actually, the company does its best to find a local place to donate it. If there is no way the company can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it is recycled instead. How Thick Is Helix Mattress

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year warranty that covers flaws, but it has some limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the purchaser (like most warranties). Of course, you must be the first owner of the mattress to use the warranty, and you need to be sure that you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all of Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty will be valid. That means you will need to use a suitable foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4″ apart) and you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress starts to show an indentation of 1″ or longer, something that generally happens when low-density foams break down, then you could be eligible for a repair or replacement of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it is suggested that you rotate the mattress possibly once or twice a year to keep it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For routine cleaning, it is suggested to use cold water with gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Be sure to clean using gentle circular movements, instead of rubbing.
