Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses manufactured using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores fortified using polyfoam base layers. Is Helix Sleep Worth It

Helix Sleep offers complete mattress customization. Buyers are requested to complete a survey that discusses their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other elements. Based on these answers, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following six mattress models; each respective model gives a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep mattresses that have targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them perfect for those who sleep on their side. While those that have moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are suitable for all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel most comfortable on models with balanced support, while individuals who weigh 130 pounds or more tend to favor the variants with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets 2 variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both these models have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, making them ideal for couples with differing preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for larger, heavier people. This mattress has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection accommodates sleepers with a wide variety of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate movement well, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Is Helix Sleep Worth It

Construction Is Helix Sleep Worth It

All 9 of the different iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be quite similar. The 6 core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in density and firmness based on the foams utilized in order to get more/less firmness and more/less support. The four unique foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the variants have all of the foams – some just have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine unique mattresses (and hopefully have a model for everyone). Is Helix Sleep Worth It

Below, I concisely discuss the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I found it to be thin and pliable, allowing for some nice breathability. But, if you want something more luxurious, you can elect to swap out the regular cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change fabric for temperature regulation.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you’ll discover a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you are likely to experience some satisfying body shaping. While it might seem strange for a purportedly medium firm bed to make use of a memory foam comfort layer, it’s crucial to remember that the presence of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in fact, oftentimes it generates quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the memory foam comfort layer, you’ll discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the memory foam and create a supportive, medium firm feel as you reach the pocketed coils underneath.

Support Layer – The bulk of the mattress is made up of this segment of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift into the construction, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, instead of “in it”. Since these coils are individually wrapped, they are also going to allow extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you will uncover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This segment does not really affect the feel of the mattress too much, functioning mostly to give the pocketed coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After having a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us discuss their varying firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix will vary widely depending on the variant you select. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have medium firmness levels, which tends to be very versatile and thus best-selling. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to oblige you with more choices.

Laying down on the Midnight, the memory foam layer feels soft and generates some quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials in the Midnight work to counteract this and create an overall firmer composition. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there is enough good comfort material here to conform to your lower spine while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or those who want a firmer mattress, there are 2 more options for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn models.

Many side sleepers will feel perfectly comfy on the Midnight, however, if you are wanting a bit less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you may decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and provides the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be more mindful of pressure because they sleep with all of their weight on a smaller area. People who are smaller than average or people in the market for plenty of pressure relief may want to stay with the plusher models.

Stomach sleepers will feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this is not their main position or they have a tendency to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their spine.

Lastly, Helix Sleep suggests Helix mattresses for sleepers around 350 lbs or partners who weigh up to 250 lbs each. If you or your partner are substantially larger than average, Helix has also created a mattress called the Nightfall that’s made to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 lbs.

Partners with different types of bodies or tastes can also select a dual comfort model that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if none of these options sound right, you could always check out the 4 other variants in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, slightly firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest mattress in the collection).

Motion Transfer

Now, let us chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that’s noticeable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this will be important for all sleepers, those who doze with a spouse may find it especially interesting as it will show just how bothered you will be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Is Helix Sleep Worth It

According to my research, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, as well as the individually wrapped coils that help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper concerned that motion from the other side of the mattress will bother you, you shouldn’t have a lot of concern with this hybrid. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

When buying a brand-new mattress, most individuals wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.

Even though you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, when you sink through these layers, you will find the pocketed coils and experience great support. This combination will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

While I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the Helix Midnight, the coils stop the mattress from collapsing a lot . I feel quite secure sitting on the bed.

In my view, Helix mattresses perform above average for edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is due to their newly updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be some compression at the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfy and safe. Partners who need more space to stretch out normally love strong edges.

Lying down, I feel like I can get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll roll over or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I think the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they usually include. Helix Mattress is no different. You create the mattress that’s made for you, place your order, and in two weeks, it is sent to your door. From the minute you click to order the mattress, you have 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it is not perfect, you can return it free, and get a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it is not restocked or resold. Actually, Helix does its best to find a local place to donate it. When there is no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it’s recycled instead. Is Helix Sleep Worth It

Helix Warranty

Helix offers an awesome 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it comes with some limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the purchaser (like most guarantees ). Needless to say, you must be the original owner of the mattress to make use of the warranty, and you need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty will be valid. That means you need to use a suitable foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4″ apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on it!

If your Helix starts to have an indentation of 1 inch or longer, something that typically happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no flipping, but it’s recommended that you rotate the mattress perhaps once or twice a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleanup, it is suggested to use cold water with gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Make certain to wash using gentle circular movements, instead of rubbing.
