Helix Sleep offers hybrid mattresses made using polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced with polyfoam base layers. Mattress Underground Helix

Helix Sleep gives you full mattress customization. Customers are asked to complete a questionnaire that discusses their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other elements. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress variants; each respective option offers a one-of-a-kind combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep mattresses with targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them optimal for side sleepers. While mattresses with moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are suitable for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel most comfortable on models with balanced support, while individuals who weigh 130 lbs or more tend to prefer the variants with additional support.

Helix Sleep also offers two variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both of these variants have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, making them great for couples with different tastes. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier individuals. This variant has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection accommodates sleepers with a large assortment of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate movement nicely, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Mattress Underground Helix

Construction Mattress Underground Helix

All 9 of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction will be quite similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in firmness and density based on the foams utilized in order to get more/less firmness and more/less support. The four different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the beds have all of the foams – some just have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine distinct versions (and supposedly have a mattress for everybody). Mattress Underground Helix

Below, I quickly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I thought it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some great breathability. But, if you would like something more luxurious, you can elect to swap out the regular cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change material to regulate heat.

Comfort Layer – On top, you will discover a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow response to pressure, which means you are probably going to encounter some gratifying body shaping. Even though it may seem odd for a purportedly medium firm bed to incorporate a memory foam layer, it’s important to remember that the existence of deep sinkage doesn’t always translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it produces quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After getting past the memory foam comfort layer, you’ll uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the comfort layer and create a supportive, medium firm feel as you reach the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress consists of this segment of individually wrapped coils. This system gives a supportive lift into the construction, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the bed, as opposed to “in it”. Because these coils are individually wrapped, they’re also going to encourage extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you will discover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This layer doesn’t affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to provide the pocketed coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After having a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us talk about their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on which version you choose. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which is going to be quite versatile and thus best-selling. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep is happy to oblige you with additional choices.

Laying down on the Midnight, the memory foam layer is soft and generates some high quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials in the mattress work to control this and create an overall firmer composition. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also help with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there is just enough good comfort material in the Midnight to conform to your lumbar while supporting your upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or people who want a firmer bed, there are 2 more choices for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn models.

Many side sleepers will feel totally comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you are needing a bit less pressure while still going with a versatile medium firmness, you might decide to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and provides the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be more mindful of pressure because they sleep with all their weight on a tinier region. People who are lighter than average or people looking for lots of pressure relief may want to stay with the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach will feel supported in the Midnight, especially if this is not their primary position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so they can make sure their hips do not dip and over-arch their backbone.

Lastly, Helix Sleep suggests Helix mattresses for sleepers up to 350 lbs or couples that weigh a maximum of 250 lbs each. If you or your spouse are substantially bigger than average, Helix has also produced a bed called the Nightfall that’s created to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with differing types of bodies or preferences may also select a dual comfort model that pairs Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if none of these models feel right, you may always have a look at the four other models in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Now, let’s chat about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that is noticeable from one side of the bed to the other. While this will be important for many buyers, those who sleep with a spouse may find it especially interesting as it will illuminate just how bothered you may be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Mattress Underground Helix

According to my research, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space due to the quantity and quality of foam it contains, in addition to the pocketed coils that help trap motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper worried that movement from the opposite side of the bed will bother you, then you shouldn’t have much concern with this hybrid. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

When purchasing a new mattress, the majority of people want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

While you may experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll reach the individually-wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will appeal to a vast range of individuals, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

While I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the bed, the individually-wrapped coils prevent the mattress from collapsing a lot . I feel quite secure sitting on the mattress.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses perform above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is due to their newly updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil system. There may be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but lying on the side will feel comfy and secure. Partners who need more space to stretch out normally love strong edges.

Lying down, I also feel like I can get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I will fall off or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I think the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of purchasing a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically come with. Helix Sleep is not any different. You create the mattress that is intended for you, place your order, and in two weeks, it’s delivered to your door. From the minute you click to buy the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t perfect, you can return it free, and get a complete refund.

Should you return the mattress, it is not resold or restocked. Actually, Helix Sleep does its best to find a local place to donate it. When there’s no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it is recycled instead. Mattress Underground Helix

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it comes with limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most warranties). Needless to say, you must be the first owner of the Helix to use the guarantee, and you need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty will be valid. That means you will need to have a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4 inches apart) and you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress starts to have an indentation of 1″ or more, which is what usually happens when low-density foams break down, then you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it’s recommended that you rotate the mattress perhaps once or twice a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleanup, it is advised to use cold water along gentle dish soap to clean any dirt or stains. Be sure to clean using soft circular motions, rather than rubbing.
